Get Out The Way, Its Chicken Nugget Day!

Tick tock, tick tock, time slows as I watch the clock strike down. As the big hand on the clock gets closer and closer, everyone in the class inches near the edge of their desks. Hearts pound and bodies anxiously prepare for the race that will soon begin. It seems that years have passed while waiting for the clock to strike twelve. The classroom is so silent a pen could be heard dropping to the yellowing tile floor.

Ding, ding, ding, and their off to the cafeteria. The hysteria has begun. Like the running of the bulls in Barcelona, Spain, students race down the hall to be the first in line. “Chicken Nugget Day, its Chicken Nugget Day!” people exclaim as I run down what seems like a mile long hallway. I pass, dodge, spin around, and jump past anything that blocks my way to the prize. Will this hallway ever end? I run past a teacher who has just decided to give up on controlling the chaos, who knows that all rules of order are thrown out the door on Chicken Nugget day.

The hallway is filled with an aroma that is only experienced in a high school cafeteria. I cannot say if the smell is good or bad, but it makes everyone in the school actually excited to eat a school lunch. The smell wafts through the corridors, luring the students to the cafeteria. Most of the time the smell coming from the kitchen turns people to run in the opposite direction of the cafeteria. But like I said, its Chicken Nugget day and all rules have been thrown out the door.

When I finally reach the cafeteria, I stand in line for hours just to get a tray of five or six little pieces of chicken, one scoop of dry boxed mashed potatoes, one scoop of watery green beans, and a roll that can take someone out if used as a weapon. I grab a chocolate milk to finish off the meal. I would usually gag at the thought of chocolate milk and green beans but Chicken Nugget day would not be complete without it. To most this is the worst possible meal, but to the typical high-school student, it equals pure happiness.

On Chicken Nugget day, the lunchroom is packed. I have to inch my way through a maze to find my table. There are kids floating around that I have never ever seen before, and I thought I knew everyone at my small school. There is always a rumor on Chicken Nugget day that kids from other schools sneak in just to get our lunch. That cannot be true, right? But after looking around the packed cafeteria and seeing every inch of the room occupied, maybe I can believe it.

Lunch time at a high school is usually a time to catch up on the gossip, relive the previous three hours’ drama, and find out who was mad at whom. But Chicken Nugget day was different. It was not a conscious thing but things were different. I would look around the tables and see more people smiling, laughing, and having fun with each other. The whole school was in a great mood. The typical trials of high school life were forgotten for a short twenty minutes while we all enjoyed our school lunch.

I loved to hear everyone’s ‘war stories’ of getting to the cafeteria on Chicken Nugget day. We could all relate and sympathize with each other.
“I had to run over three freshmen to get here in time!”
“Well I was at the front of the line but then Mrs. Nelson and Mr. Groner cut in front!”
“Mr. Moman was going to make the newspaper staff work through lunch but then we reminded her that we are having chicken nuggets today and she let us leave class a minute early!”

In elementary and middle school, we had Chicken Nugget day also. It was still the best meal the cafeteria made, but the excitement was not close to what I would experience in high school. Everyone older than me would always say, “High school food is awful, you do not know how much better you have it in middle school.” When they told me this, I was so surprised. I thought to myself, “I will never get to have a wonderful chicken nugget day again.” Well thank goodness I was wrong. And was I ever surprised at how much better it got at high school!

When I was a junior, one class sold shirts as a fundraiser dedicated to Chicken Nugget day. They said, “Get out the way, its chicken nugget day.” This became the slogan of the day and could be seen on countless people on Chicken Nugget day. We even had a special page in the yearbook dedicated to the most fantastic day in high school. There were pictures of everyone in their shirts, eating their favorite meal, and sharing special memories in the school cafeteria.
Now that I am in college, I miss those special chicken nugget days. I have yet to see anyone running throughout campus yelling, “Its Turkey Bacon Wrap day!” I do not see anyone wearing special shirts representing their favorite item on the lunch menu. When I was young, I never imagined that I would miss a dish out of the school cafeteria as much I do. Or the way it brought my school together. This special day was just a few times a month, but it gave many memories I will always love, laugh at, and think about with fondness. I will never look at a chicken nugget without thinking of the precious times I spent with my friends, racing to be first in line for Chicken Nugget day.

In Class Work

1. Description
I walked down the hall and I could smell the odor sweeping out through the cracks of the door. As soon as I opened the door to the apartment, I knew that my roommate had played party host all weekend long. When I stepped into the room I heard a crunch and looked down and saw food all over the floor. As I headed to my room I found someone passed out on my bedroom floor with beer cans all around them. The smell in the room was so awful, I could not even stay in there without gagging. When my roommate finally woke up later that day we had a long discussion about what happen all weekend long.
2. Process
The first week I started college, I learned a lot of different things living with new people. One, my roommate has the most peculiar morning ritual. When she first wakes up in the morning she always has to brush her hair no matter what. After that she then brushes her teeth and puts lotion to make sure her skin is not dry. I cannot blame her for doing that though. After all of that you would think that she is awake but instead she lays back down, gets on the computer to look at email’s and facebook, and makes phone calls. After her doing her everyday rituals she is ready to start the day with new things.
3. Illustration
The university bookstore takes advantage of students in many ways. At many college campus bookstores this happens. They make all of their supplies, clothing, accessories, textbooks, and ect. very expensive. Many stores make their supplies the cheapest things in the store hoping students will buy them other than big companies. Also they make their cloths more expensive than usual. Bookstores know that all students want to support their school and one way is to wear close with the university on it. Bookstores are usually the only place to buy cute shirts and outfits to wear. Stores make the textbooks especially expensive. Everyone need the textbooks to pass the class, so the bookstore makes them expensive for everyone can buy them contently.
4. Description
When I first met Fern, I knew immediately that she was a smoker. I could instantly smell the bad odor coming off of her cloths. Because she is an older lady, I could see the wrinkles around her mouth realizing she has smoked for years. Her fingers tips were yellow caused from smoking all those years. While I was talking to her just for a few minutes I could tell she was jittering and could not stop moving because she needed some nicotine. She is the nicest lady’s in the world but I just wished she would have not smoked all those years.
5. Narration
It had been the worst day ever. When I first woke up late that morning for class and forgot to do an important assignment due that day. When I walked into the class the teacher was taking up the assignment and made me get in front of everyone to present my homework. I had to tell her in front of everyone that I did not get mine done. When that class was over I went to my next class and had a very hard pop quiz that I knew I had failed. The rest of the day had gone downhill from there. When it was all said and done, I was just glad to call it a day.
6. Cause and Effect.
Attending USI has changed my life in many ways. When I first got here I was a very shy person, once I knew you for awhile I was more outgoing, but I had to get used to you. After attending USI I have become more outgoing. I have met many new friends and people that I care about very much and I am not shy around them at all. When I first I already decided that I was going to be outgoing. Being here has changed me to be more fun around everyone.

Revison Plans

With peer revisions I realized that I need to work on my paragraphs a little more and describe the scenes a little clearer. Also I need to add more dialog to my story about the bus trip and the bomb threat. This editing has helped me realize what I need to fix. I am planning on adding more dialogs to my essay to get the readers into the story even more and I also am going to add more character into the story. I am going to explain a little more where all we visited so that the readers can understand it a little more.

English 201-Essay #1 Draft Self-evaluation

1. I decide to select the first prompt explaining one of my school memories. It appealed to me because I loved the trip and I think it is a funny story I like to tell about. I also considered writing the second one because I also like that story but I thought readers would enjoy my trip better.

2. The most helpful mode for me to create this content was narration and description because primarily told about my story. I also used illustration in my story.

3. I told the readers about how I acted when these events happened. I wanted them to be important so that the story can be more amusing and the readers would get into much more. They accomplish entertainment for the reader and myself.

4. I told the readers about the places that had the most action during the week and also they would interest readers more rather than other sites I had seen during that week.
The driver had to call the bus company to have them ship another bus
to us so we could get back on the road and head home again, but the
company called back and told us that they could not find a bus for
us. It was derby weekend in Lexington, Kentucky and all the extra
buses were taken for other uses. They decided that we should stay in
a hotel in the next town until the morning so the part could get
fixed. A truck came and could only pick up a few kids at time to take
to the hotel. After several hours my dad, two other girls, the
teacher, and me were the last to get picked up. When we got to the
hotel it was three in the morning and the rest of the class was
already asleep. We woke up that morning and had to find things to
keep busy until the bus was fixed. About two in the afternoon the bus
was ready and we could leave to start home again. Having our bus
brake down was the worst thing that happened all week, but I had made
so many memories from just that night that I love. Before we left for
D.C., I knew I was going to make memories but I did not realize how
many wonderful ones I would have.

5. My main reason to write this essay was to entertain the readers. I am hoping that the viewers will laugh at my story and think that it is as amusing as I did.

6. I thought about the places we went to that the readers would like the most. If I told them about going to the capital and just telling them facts, the story would get boring and no one would care about it.

7. I had trouble trying to come up with enough entertainment for the viewers to keep reading my story and not get bored with it.
I would like my peer reviewers to help me with my grammar and also if I described everything so that they can understand it clearly.

One Crazy Ride

It was the end of a chapter in my life, I was getting ready to graduate from middle school and start high school in the fall. My eighth grade graduating class only contained twenty-seven students was getting ready to go on our class trip. We had raised money throughout the year to go on a to Washington D. C. I had been excited about this trip as well as the entire class. We had been talking about this trip since I was little and could not believe it was already here. After church Saturday night we got onto the charter bus and left for our adventure in D.C. We had driven all night to make it to Washington by morning. Me and my friends were so hyper and crazy on the bus ride and could not wait to get there. Around ten o’clock the next day we finally got to D.C. and already started making memories. Throughout the week we went to many churches, famous sites, and parks.
Throughout that week, my class and I had visited many different sites. Since I went to a catholic school we visited many different churches in Washington D.C. We visited the Pentagon, the Vietnam Wall, and many, many more places. During this trip we had many experiences that we will never experience again.
One of the one of the first days we visited Washington, we went to the Congress Library. While we were walking up to get our tickets, our teacher and some other parents told the kids to hurry and go into the building across the street. We stayed in there for at least an hour or more before we had heard what the problem was and why we could not visit the library. Our teacher informed us that there was a bomb threat made right on the street we were standing on and we had to get away from it. I was so scared because all I could think about was September 11th even though I should have realized D.C. gets threats all the time. The rest of the week I so scared everywhere we went because I was afraid something was going to happen.
Even though it was so scary the week had been so much fun but so exhausting. I did not want to leave but I was ready to be home and see the rest of my family. We packed the bus and left early that morning for the twelve hour bus trip back home. On the bus trip everyone slept and tried to relax thinking about all the fun we had that week not even imaging what was going to happen later that night. It was about eleven o’clock that and we were still in West Virginia, when I woke up from sleeping to hear all the parents panicking again. I thought there could be no problems like earlier that week; we were not around important buildings anymore. I look out the window and see that our bus was on the side of the road in a complete stop. Our teacher informed us that the bus had broken down and the bus driver was trying to fix it. A little while later he came back on and told us that the bus was broken and he cannot keep driving it until it gets fixed.
The driver had to call the bus company to have them ship another bus to us so we could get back on the road and head home again, but the company called back and told us that they could not find a bus for us. It was derby weekend in Lexington, Kentucky and all the extra buses were taken for other uses.
